Here's Your certification roadmap

Introduction

You will be immersed in the urgency of medical diagnosis through a high-stakes EMERGENCY ROOM case to experience firsthand the life-or-death impact of a physician’s decisions.

Rushing Gurney Down Hospital Hallway Emergency De[t

Cardiovascular Anatomy and Physiology

You will learn the foundational anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, including the structure and function of the heart, its electrical conduction system, and the systemic and pulmonary vasculature. This will set the stage for how physicians understand acute chest pain.

Cardiovascular Pathophysiology

You will learn how blood pressure is regulated. You will also learn the warning signs of life-threatening cardiovascular conditions, including myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, aortic dissection, and cardiac tamponade.

Respiratory Anatomy and Physiology

Through detailed exploration of the respiratory system, students trace the path of air through the upper and lower respiratory tracts, examine how the diaphragm and chest wall enable breathing, and uncover the mechanisms of gas exchange that sustain oxygen delivery throughout the body.

Respiratory Pathophysiology

Learn how pneumonia and a pneumothorax disrupt normal lung function.

Gastrointestinal Anatomy and Physiology

Explore how food moves through the digestive system, how organs like the stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas contribute to digestion and nutrient absorption, and how the body transforms food into usable energy and waste.

Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology

Week 5 focuses on the underlying causes and symptoms of common gastrointestinal disorders, highlighting how disruptions in digestive function can lead to serious health complications and require timely diagnosis and care. This includes conditions such as acid reflux, peptic ulcers, gallstones, and pancreatitis.

Differential Diagnosis of Acute Chest Pain

In Week 6, you will bring together what you have learned so far to begin the process of diagnosis. You will look at many different causes of potential acute chest pain.

The Building Blocks of Diagnosis: History Taking and Physical Examinations

You will shift your focus to the human story behind the symptoms, learning how to take a targeted medical history that captures essential details about a patient's chief complaint. Through structured frameworks like OLD CARTS and SOCRATES, you will learn to ask important questions to guide your decision making and lay the foundation for diagnosis.

Differential Diagnosis

Learn the systems approach and the etiological approach to diagnosis, as well as other tools, to generate and refine differential diagnosis.

Diagnostic Studies

Explore key diagnostic studies, including ECG, echocardiogram, X-ray, CT scan, and ultrasound, gaining insight into how these studies support clinical decision-making and help confirm or rule out critical conditions.

Laboratories

Learn how to interpret key laboratory tests—including metabolic panels, blood counts, cardiac markers, and clotting indicators—to support clinical decision-making and rule out life-threatening conditions.

Case Studies

Finally, you'll step into the shoes of a practicing physician, applying everything you’ve learned in realistic emergency scenarios with six real-world case studies.
